The major function of H. W. Byers High School is to provide a quality education for the entire community which it serves, especially its students. To this end, we adhere to the shared purpose of the Marshall County School district: "To teach the prescribed curriculum to all students."

H. W. Byers High School’s staff believes that all children can learn. Consequently, we believe that our most pressing responsibilities are to motivate and guide the students to assume increasing responsibility for their own learning. Therefore, we must strive to develop a more effective school program geared to this end based upon proven mastery of the prescribed curriculum.

Our commitment to this purpose is demonstrated by our total support of the effective schools ideology. We will continue in our efforts to become more effective through use of the Effective School Research Data. To us, this is vital, because we believe that "Our youth are our greatest asset."

Various upgrades have taken place this past summer.  We have added a new parking lot for faculty and staff, which has increased parking for parents and visitors. We have also constructed a sports complex which allows football, baseball, and softball to be played inside the same fenced area. With the addition of the sports complex, restrooms, a concession stand, a press box, and two new field houses have been added to the campus.
